Watercolour paintings of Angkor-Wat temple ruins in Cambodia

In 2002, while living in London, I was invited by a Cambodian friend Ravynn Karet – Coxen, to visit Angkor Wat. I flew to Cambodia to support her charity project “Nginn Karet Foundation for Cambodia”, which she had set up as Founder Chairman in 1994 in the name of her late father, and to help recover her country from the disastrous Khmer Rouge war.

Staying in Siem Riep, I went almost daily to the Angkor Watt´s ancient temple complex, which fascinated me by its architecture, its history, and the fauna around the other-worldly temple ruins. During my visits, I was inspired to paint these watercolours paintings on site.

While painting and sitting in front of an ancient entrance door, which forms part of a temple ruin, surrounded by some big tree roots around it, “Giant Root at Ta Prohm Temple” some tourist told me, that just a few months before, the movie “Tomb Riders” with Angelina Jolie was filmed there. During my flight back to London, I then had the pleasure to see this movie.

Angkor is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre and contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the ancient Khmer Empire.

Cambodia was an unforgettable experience!
